How Much Are You Worth?
As businesses continue to expand and invest more in technology, ERP salaries are on the rise.
Whether you’re an ERP consultant or employed full time in the ERP field, this increasing demand for talent spells out an opportunity for greater earning potential. But pay in the ERP field depends on a lot of factors, from the geographical location and size of the employer to the number of years of ERP experience required for a job and the scarcity of the particular ERP skills.
A Few Steps to Maximizing Your Pay Potential
No matter which area of expertise you pursue in your ERP career, there are a couple of ways you can capitalize on potential pay opportunities.
Lesson 1: Develop your leadership skills.
Technical skills can be learned, but good leadership skills will always give you an edge over others in your field. Companies want their ERP and IT employees to contribute to the competitiveness of the business, and good leaders can demand a premium because they can elevate the business results of an ERP initiative.
Lesson 2: Clearly define your area of expertise.
Specialization can earn you premium pay. And the more specific you are, the more likely you are to be matched to a satisfying position. Too many ERP consultants and candidates are reluctant to focus on one aspect of expertise for fear of losing out on other opportunities. But when you try to appeal to everyone, the strength of your appeal diminishes across the board. Instead, show how you are the best candidate for the area you want to work in most.
Lesson 3: Decide what’s most important to you.
Maybe you’re up to the challenge of travel that accompanies some ERP consulting gigs offering higher pay. Many ERP consultants don’t want to spend the time away from their families. For some, the intangible benefit of less travel time can have more weight than a pay increase, as can other specific benefits offered by a company or position.
- Desired work environment - Do you want to supervise others? Work in a team? Or by yourself? Generally, the more responsibility you can handle, the greater your potential for earning.
- Long hours - How much overtime are you willing to work? If you don’t mind burning the midnight oil for a couple years, take advantage of an ERP job that requires a lot of overtime.
- Geographical mobility - Would you relocate to another city or are you looking to stay put? You’ll open yourself up to greater opportunities if you are mobile.
- Size of employer - Do you prefer to work with smaller companies (SMEs) where you might have a greater chance to make a real difference, or a large enterprise where you might be paid more? While larger companies often have larger budgets, a smaller company may let you move up the ranks faster, letting you acquire precious experience in a position that can set you up for greater pay opportunities down the road.
